Fight Back Fridays 9.25.09: What's Happening in My Kitchen

For the last few weeks, there hasn't been much exciting going on in my kitchen. We've been too busy getting back into the swing of our homeschool routine and fall activities. My freezer and pantry are looking a bit bare. Over the next week or two, I have some catching up to do.

Here's what WILL be going on in my kitchen soon, my "Real Food To-Do List" if you will:

I'm SO excited to try my hand at making homemade raw cheese! This is something I've been wanting to do for several years and I'm finally taking the plunge! Raw cheese is just not in my meager grocery budget, but we have an affordable source of raw milk so I'll try my hand at making my own. I doubt I can make enough to supply all of our cheese needs, but I can provide some of it anyway! My kit came in today and I'll report back soon on how it goes.

We're almost completely out of bread. I ran out of honey and actually had to get a small bottle of store bought honey to tide me over until I can get more from my local source. I'll be making a batch of bread and rolls this weekend. I'm also hoping to finally try out my rye bread recipe. I LOVE rye bread and ordered a small bucket of rye berries recently just so I could make my own, but haven't had time yet.

We're completely out of homemade butter, and our dairy hasn't had cream available for the last few weeks! I'm hoping I can get some cream this order and get another batch made!

I also used my last container of Homemade Condensed Cream of Chicken this week, only have two of my Easy Homemade Pizza/Pasta Sauce, and only have a handful of my chicken broth cubes left. Time for a "Make Ahead Meal Makings" day to restock!

Lastly, I'll be inventorying the meat I have on hand because our meat coop order is due next week.

Hopefully next week I can report progress on most of these "to-do's".

  1. I have always shopped at grocery stores and am now wondering about coops and buying in large quantities from nearby sources. Is it less expensive? Is it harder to come up with meals? I'm wondering how this works for every day.

  3. Noel,

It actually is! I wrote a post about this very thing not too long ago:

  4. If you come over and teach me to do some of these things I'll make you supper. ;)

A friend of mine and I are going to be opening a drop off location for a local produce coop soon, she’s been a member for a long time, I’ll be joining for the first time. In addition to locally grown and organic produce, they also have sources for raw milk, local organic meats, fresh milled (upon order) grain and some other things. It’s not my end goal, but it will be a good place to start to begin getting some healthier and more natural foods for my family. I can’t wait!
